Rabies cases in Peru caused by animal bites are occurring mostly in the areas of Barquispe and the Amazon.

Experts warn that if health authorities do not take safety measures against rabies, it could return. The disease has been present in Peru for many years and many tourists who come on Amazon tours are bitten by monkeys and bats and thus may be infected with the disease.

Human rabies is a fatal disease, transmitted through the bite of an animal infected with the disease, the virus is transmitted mainly by dogs and bats, but can also be spread by other infected animals. In 2025, no cases of rabies in humans were confirmed. However, there have been cases of rabies infection in wild animals in areas of the Amazon, Loreto, Aporimac, Arequipa and more.

Rabies infection is a serious disease that can be complicated, and after an animal bite, you should go to a medical center/hospital and be examined by a qualified doctor to be on the safe side, so as not to take unnecessary risks.
